via Instagram Even Goldilocks might be perplexed as to which of these three ‘13 Pinot Noirs is ‘just right’. Which one would you select?
2013 Joseph Phelps “Quarter Moon Vineyard” Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
Medium pale, bright ruby. Decadent perfume of blackberry, plum and baking spice. Well-extracted layers of juicy ripe cherry and raspberry. Medium-plus body, with crushed stone and cardamom spice. Unsurprisingly the crowd favorite tonight between @winedog64, @macthorny and myself … sugar plum and warm, ripe Cali fruit – 93+ points.
2013 Louis Jadot Bourgogne Pinot Noir
Pale ruby. Earthy fruit nose. Dry, austere, acidic on the palate. Medium bodied with pure raspberry and cherry fruit and smooth tannins. Great typicity for an entry level Burgundy, but far outclassed in this trio unfortunately. A wonderful table wine; I enjoyed it later with chicken and tater tots! A bit austere for this crowd – 88 points.
2013 Eyrie “Estate Grown” Willamette Valley Pinot Noir
Extra pale ruby. Needs to decant and breath a while, but then you find amazing, herbal depth. Red currant, strawberry and earthy spice aromas. Austere plum and dark cherry flavors, crisp tannins and lingering white pepper on the finish. Definitely the most delicate wine here – 91 points.
